Too much to do all the time and not enough (probably) signals about which ones are important. I have sat down at my computer to write the rest of the musical and instead I did a lot of magazine admin, paid all the bills, and replied to a close friend who is having a hard time in quarantine. Was this procrastination? Was it intelligent prioritization? I don't know.

Yesterday for mom's birthday I made her a yellow cake flavored with orange blossoms, with lavender and powdered sugar icing, with layers of pistachio cream and sugared strawberries and blackberries. Silver sprinkles on top. I wanted something very feminine and adult and whimsical, like if you stumbled into a tea party thrown by Victorian sorceresses.

It sounds delicious as well as visually spectacular. was it?

It was pretty, although I suspect the yellow/red/green combo of the interior has a tendency to look savory in a way that's misleading. So many pasta plates and sandwiches that look like that. Which I guess is useful to know if I ever want to do a "trick" cake.

The frosting was a nice pinky purple to get around purple frosting's tendency (in my experience) to look a bit gray. I'm never entirely sure whether that's my eyes, though; I've noticed when I process photos I always shift them more magenta to make them look "right."
