Time Travel for Money

rinueI'm doing my best not to talk much about the fiscal cliff or EU austerity policies or any of it, because I think it would be insufferably tedious inside-baseball talk to almost everyone.
But I would like to get one thing out into the world at large.
Debt is time travel for money. That's all it is.
Debt is future you sending money back to the present day. It could prevent you from dying. It could also get you trapped in paradox where you never catch up to yourself. This is not really a metaphor; it's a definition. Debt is time travel for money. Consequently, debt is not inherently bad or good, or irresponsible. Sometimes, low-interest debt is the definition of responsible, as those of us who have taken out student loans and/or mortgages ought to know but seem to be forgetting right now.

I just want to get that out there.
