rinueMostly boycott 3D, but Ciro and I trekked downtown to see Cave Of Forgotten Dreams because we trust Werner Herzog not to use technology superfluously. The film is a record of the oldest known cave paintings - I believe the oldest known visual art of any kind - and the three-dimensional cave walls are essential to correctly perceiving the two-dimensional line drawings, which in that context begin to approach sculpture.
The art is remarkable not only for its age but in itself. It called to mind Picasso and Calder, and could have been drawn yesterday if someone was good enough. The control of line was breathtaking; I literally gasped several times as images were revealed. I envy the artists their skill.
3D is still nonsense, though. In this case, a necessary presentation, but the inflated ticket price remains unnecessary.*
Afterwards, hazelnut espresso at The Thinking Cup, then back to Winchester for the rest of town day.
