Just captioned the Ohio Gubernatorial Debate. (Mostly boring and predictable.) Toward the end, the two candidates described their respective running mates. My transcript, edited down slightly:

Candidate One:
She was born to a single teenage mother. She worked hard. She went to college at Ohio university, then attended the Ohio State Law school.

At a very young age, she decided to run for judge. She defeated a sitting Republican judge when she was 32 years of age. She served on that court for nine years and developed an amazing reputation throughout central Ohio as a judge who was wise, effective, compassionate, caring.

She was recruited away from that position to go to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus to start a grass-roots organization, to be an advocate for children and their families, primarily abused children and troubled families. She built that into a 400-person operation with a $30 million a year budget.

She is hugely qualified. She is hugely respected. She will make a great governor if it is ever necessary for me to vacate the office.

Candidate Two:
Mary first of all is a mom. She is also the wife of a small-businessperson. She understands the travails that small-businesspeople have to go through. She was also a CPA for 16 years.

Mary was also a state Representative. The boys down there tried to put a lot of pressure on Mary to vote for a tax increase. It was Republicans doing it. She said no way. They stripped her from her committee assignments. She did not bat an eye.

I have had that same pressure applied to me. She stood up and was strong. She turned around and ran for state auditor. She was the only Republican elected and has done a fantastic job of auditing the problems of this state. If she had been listened to more by a lot of people, it would have paid off.

I am really proud she is my running mate. She is terrific. She is qualified to do anything she sets her mind to. Thanks for asking. I do not have a single negative thing to say.

[end of transcript]

Can you spot the sexism? One of these guys is talking about his running mate as a person. One of these guys is talking about his running mate as a heavily gendered and infantilized person, who aw shucks sometimes has masculine traits like him even though it's so hard for a little lady. Boy, I sure bet she could succeed at stuff if those bullies would give her a turn. It's freaking adorable of her. Plus she has her husband to give her advice, so it's safe.

Incidentally, Candidate 2 has a six point polling lead according to Nate Silver. Not that I'm a single-issue voter or particularly like Candidate 1, but Jesus I'm tired of this shit not getting called out.

I am in a horrible mood right now thanks to allergies and a sinus headache that will. not. die. It usually gets better after dark, but so far today it's still blah. Maybe in another few hours.
