My favorite proposed derivation for "shenanigan" is from the Irish sionnachuighim: “I play the fox”.

It's plausible that it comes from less fun Spanish or German origins about trickery or work. This one's better. I vote on this one. We own history. We can make this true. Let's go raid some hen houses.

I have a book of collected Irish folktales and I am almost certain there is a story in it about a fox which puts a guy's boots in the fire so the man has to get out of the doorway to save them and let the fox escape the house before the dogs come. I totally think this is proof.

If only for the nonchalant manner of the fox and the witty banter of course. The fox might have set fire to the bed too. It's...a pretty strange story.
