Random Memories
Jun. 29th, 2008 09:29 pmMy third birthday. Alice-in-Wonderland themed. My cousin Scarlett ate fistfuls of chocolate cake until she was sick.
My great aunt died. A year later, my grandmother died. A month later, their house burned down. I recovered a green plaid shirt, a box of costume jewelry, and a metal filigree picture frame. While cleaning the soot off, I lost my grip on the glass and sliced open my palm. I have never felt a cleaner cut. I don't know how long I left my hand under the tap, ecstatic at the sensation of cold water on exposed nerves.
I pounded discarded limestone into a powder so I could whitewash a wattle-and-daub wall I built in a corner of the woods. It took hours, and years.
In a church musical, I played Jonah, although the songs were not in a comfortable range. I think I was cast because I was popular; a strong singer; an assured stage presence - and not because I could execute a flawless shoulder roll from the mouth of the whale.
