Got through the first table read of Hayseeds yesterday, with the lead actress joining us from Val's house via Skype as she is in New Mexico and has no Internet herself. They had a storm blowing in and the air conditioner was out, so we got to see her hair floating around her head for most of the meeting. She got to see us in black and white because Ciro felt that was more arty. (I must admit, we looked very attractive. He and I have practiced "lighting for Skype" a lot, thanks to England.) James was with us, but appeared mostly as a booming offscreen voice and occasionally as a hand puppet.

As for the table read itself . . . it was a table read. In other words, it was more of an icebreaker than anything else, or a signal to the actors that we're going to start rehearsing after this. Val stopped by to say hello. Wasabi peas were consumed. People still seem to think the script is funny.

We all acknowledged how brutal it is to be fitting this around day jobs, but also how remarkably hard people are working to help us simply out of affection for who we are and what we are trying to accomplish.

Prior to the meeting, I cooked the heck out of some eggplant (as eggplant requires a heck of a lot of cooking before it is coaxed into its delicious state), and subsequent to it made zucchini jam according to this recipe, more or less. Grating the zucchini took ages, even with a special tool, but it was thoroughly satisfying to squeeze the moisture out afterward -- a viscous green fluid somewhere between alien blood and Italian wedding soup. I should have thought to taste it before sending it down the drain. Next time.
