The System is Down
Jul. 17th, 2010 02:41 pmI came in to work to discover the network was down for several hours and I could not do any work; even the personal work I would do requires the Internet. And wouldn't you know it's the one day I didn't remember to bring a book with me (at the moment, Post Captain, second in the Aubrey-Maturin series). Fortunately, I have as a backup for these occasions Postwar, by Tony Judt, which I have been pacing my way through for about three years -- a truly superb history, but very dense.
I had yesterday off, so Ciro and I went to see Inception, as one could have guessed we would. I enjoyed it, and it made me think fondly about other movies I like (specifically, Blade Runner and The Cell). It has been a while since a movie has made me so tense, because it's the first time in ages I've liked all of the characters a lot and not been sure of who is and is not going to make it. Even the most minor roles are actors I know and like. I long to read vast expanses of fanfic, which is not something I've felt in close to a decade. Such a compelling (and expandable) story world, so much implied character depth, so much backstory to fill in and loose ends to extrapolate. Alas, I suspect this is not something fandom will latch onto - too mainstream, too discontinuous. Ciro is less pessimistic and believes the film will be slashed left, right, and center. Time will tell.
Aside from that, we went swimming at Jesse's. (I am very out of condition; I feel 20 years older than I did last month. I don't know whether it's allergies or lack of sleep, but I have no stamina.) Then we got milkshakes and watched a few episodes of Fairy Tale Theater, which Ciro had never seen, to my surprise.
