When we watched Toy Story 3, one of the things I noticed was how delighted we all were every time Buzz Lightyear spoke Spanish. There was more joy on my friends' faces when that happened than at any other point in the movie -- presumably because we're from Texas and understand enough Spanish that we knew what he was saying. It wasn't wittier than the English dialog; it was pretty uncomplicated. But there is something exciting about noticing you understand something.

All of which is a way of saying Ciro and I have been pining for Rosetta Stone's Italian course, and this was the final straw. We have bought it with a portion of our diversity training and textbook-editing money, as we felt this was appropriate. It's very exciting; our income is for the most part still very tied up in student loans and funding the film. This is an incredible extravagance. I have spent much of the day informing empty rooms that the children run and the man swims.

On the subject of Italian, today in my family is Italian Day, celebrated by most of the world as Bastille Day, but coincidentally the anniversary of my parents' first date (at an Italian restaurant, after several years of friendship). Also coincidentally, yesterday was the day Rosetta Stone arrived and also my and Ciro's fourth anniversary as a couple. We weren't really able to do anything special - we had film meetings, he had class and needed to study for a test, I had to grocery shop, and it was all we could manage to sit down for 40 minutes and watch Friday Night Lights. But we did smile at each other a lot.
