I'd guess I have in the ballpark of 400 books in Dallas, plus a shelf full of sheet music and notebooks and another shelf of magazines (mostly back issues of Wired, American Cinematographer, and Cinefex). Ciro has 300 or so, plus magazines (mostly back issues of Wired, National Geographic, Asimov's, Analog, 2600, and Realms of Fantasy). All told, we probably have around 100 movies and 350 CDs. We like all of it to remain accessible, because we reference all of it with a frequency that surprises even us. It's tough to accommodate. We have a tiny apartment, and there is no wall not full of tiny rectangular objects. (I haven't mentioned the art, much of it by us or our friends, much of it still un-hung. And rectangular.) It's getting overwhelming.

My books are still disorganized from packing unpacking packing unpacking packing unpacking packing unpacking, so as a general surrender I've put them in color instead of subject order. In a few months, I may reorganize by size. Then relative weight. All of this fights my general attitude toward books, which to me are portable information rather than objects of sacredness - the physical properties are negligible unless the type is crabby or rubs off on my hands. A book being red or green - who cares? But the problem now is physical space. Blank canvas. Trying to make a home that doesn't feel cramped when a third person walks in the door. I'm shifting books; Ciro is moving desks around. A small amount of money would make these problems go away, as always.

The film I've been producing is in postproduction; I may see a first cut tonight. Lots of sound work to be done. But it's shaping up.

I have sent a ton of poems to various reputable magazines like Ploughshares and Subtropics and American Poetry Review. I won't hear back for months, and it will probably be rejections, but I did after all apply to places like MIT on similar odds. I would like it if I could take a standardized test to let people know I am a good poet. I dashed off a short story to see whether I could still do it - flash fiction, as mine usually are. "The Real Americans." Nothing with a future, probably, but it mostly follows Vonnegut's 8 rules.

I've been talking to the Dallas Museum of Art - they're interested in showing "The Origin of the Milky Way" sometime in November or January, and maybe in having me lead some workshops. This being the art world, nothing is certain until the last minute. But it's promising. My goals for this week are to finish the press packet for "The Sleeping People" and to see whether I can drum up gallery interest for any of my stills. I'm in script development on the as-yet-untitled Chad Docu-Fiction, but this seems like a poor time to ask for my budget, since the dollar is surprisingly strong against the pound - suddenly, and at the least useful time.

I don't have time for NaNoWriMo, but might do it anyway, just for the structure of the thing.
