Something I've noticed over the past few years is that ESL speakers really like the sitcom Friends. The premise is simple and cross-cultural, the vocabulary is basic and often repeated, and the style of delivery is generally slow, with emphasis put on every word - and if you miss something, there's enough mugging to give you the gist. Plots are slow-moving and depend more on character and emotion than on wordplay or jargon-heavy technical concepts. And, well, it's friendly - it's New York and America as a place where even wacky people can find love and social support. Nadia watches a few episodes a day, which reminds me of Augusto. It's charming.
