Some Kind of Space-Age Material

The hostel where I live is generous enough to supply us with towels - one per person per term, ordinarily, to be laundered by us. My towel has just been unexpectedly replaced by housekeeping, and the new towel is something special. I can run my face back and forth across its entire surface, and my face will still be wet. It is perhaps made of an unabsorbent soft plastic which only resembles cotton.

Actually, that would be an accurate description of what would happen to a towel if you treated it with a lot of fabric softener, as I learned recently when I decided to research how to do my laundry better. What possessed me to do this? When my towels stopped absorbing things... even when I spilled cranberry juice on them.

While you were doing this, did you wear white clothes and a moustache and face the viewer while simultaneously emptying two glasses of cranberry juice on two towels?
