All of a Sudden

All of a sudden I am an ordained minister. As many of you expected would happen, valancy and I are getting married. Or actually I am marrying her to someone else. Officially. As a member of the clergy.

Despite the fact that I took my vows online, and that they amounted to "I believe in freedom of religion, and furthermore I try to do what's right," I am having a Thomas Becket moment, if Thomas Becket had gone through investiture at the Round Table.

I want to make at least a good faith effort to do a correct job of this, so if anybody needs any spiritual guidance or has a baby to baptise, please let me know.

I...what? How does that work? And is it legally binding?

It is legally binding; I sign the certificate that gets filed with the county clerk. I live in the U.S., where under the first amendment of the Constitution, I am granted freedom of religion - which means that if a religious organization (in this case, the Universal Life Church, where I can believe whatever I want so long as I'm nice about it) says I'm a minister, I am. All I had to do was fill in a form online. In other states, I would then have to file with the county - give them a letter from the church which says I am a member in good standing, etc. - but I live in Texas, where you're married if you say you're married. (Literally. If you go around for three days telling people you're married, you are, unless there's a legal reason you can't be. We were frontier for a long time, and there would sometimes be years without officiants handy.)

Of course, now I have to give a sermon. Bugger.

My instant reaction to this icon was "yay!" and to be honest that is still my overwhelming thought about it. It is so pure and expressive! I can't not say "yay!"

YAY!!! I am very excited about this:) I hate weddings. Really. But mostly because of ministers who I just don't get. This wedding will be different!!! YAY!!! I will be there with bells on now.. and hopefully Ed will be back in time to come too:)
