Capo'd! (or: Rock Cornish Game Hen)
Apr. 19th, 2007 03:45 pmYesterday, for the first time, I procured myself a guitar capo, which means that I can now play capoed tabs I find on the internet without having to go through the bother of transposing them. Hooray! I could in theory detune my guitar a half step, Nirvana style, and still play regular songs by capoing at the first fret! I am trying to convince myself that this is like having several guitars at my beck and call, and is not in fact cheating [my primary instrument is the piano]! And it doesn't make it any easier to use nonstandard tunings! I need at least five more guitars! And should probably practice more than once a season! Hooray!
So anyway, capo is exciting, although it is a three-dollar plastic capo bought at Target, and although I am leaving for London early Tuesday morning and will once again be separated from all musical instruments. I did find a piano down in the basement of the school, but it's way out of tune. I already miss my guitar, which is in Dallas - I've been using REL's, which is three-quarter size and significantly lower quality - and soon I will be back to no guitar whatsoever. Which really sucks. Someone in London needs to ask me to sing in their band, with the understanding that I will never actually be able to perform, due to a bizarre restriction on student visas.
I miss music already. It was hard enough last time, and I lived with an opera singer. I've never been much of a concert-goer, or even liked performing; I just like to make music, ideally with other people, and ideally not in unison. Among other things, it's kind of my way of self-medicating. Other than the last London stretch, I've only not had an instrument freshman year of college - I sometimes used the piano in the pub, or in one of the residence halls, but this was too close to performing. No good.
[Edit: I forgot to mention that I have already cut my hand on the capo. Just the once thus far. Good times.]
