Year in Review (a meme)
Feb. 11th, 2007 01:52 pmOkay, so this is probably coming a little late. But here it is:
1. What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?
Sang a lot of Country music. Divorced. Became romantically involved with Ciro. Applied to and was accepted by a graduate school. Was viewed with suspicion by a foreign government, and heavily surveiled by same. Lived in Stoke Newington. Met Tilly in person. Found out what it feels like to need someone. Noticed I have age lines now.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
If I made any, I don't remember them. So far, I've made grandiose monthly resolutions, some of which I've met. They tend to be a hash of things like "eat a sandwich" and "come up with ways to revamp U.S. healthcare system."
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No. Well, sort of - my friend Turtle. It's been a few years since I last corresponded with her, and she's on another continent, but I keep tabs through Valancy. I have no idea whether that counts as close to me.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandfather, after several strokes.
5. What countries did you visit?
Just the U.S. and U.K.; I tried to get to Ireland, but was too busy. Next year.
6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006.
Self confidence; I've been neurotic lately. It'd also be great to have a steady income stream, although I don't see that as likely while I'm still in school. I really hope Ciro will be able to join me in London this time; that I even have to worry about that hurts a lot.
7. What date from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
July 4 - divorce. (I don't remember the actual day the divorce went through legally; it was months later, and not especially important to me.) July 13 - Ciro. September 10th - left Dallas.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Most people would probably say film school, and expect me to say Ciro, but honestly, the divorce. That was hard to do, and I'm still proud of us for doing it.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I don't know. There were many.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Countless blisters and heel abrasions, regardless of the sensibility of the shoes; my feet are too damn delicate for this earth.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Val bought me some pretty sweet cowboy boots, and I found some pretty groovy skirts. I don't buy much; I have no income.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Basically all my friends'. Everybody was awesome this year.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Various members of governments and bureaucracies. Most especially certain people at Richland College and certain people at Heathrow Airport.
14. Where did most of your money go?
School and housing. Plane tickets.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Ciro. Oh my god you have no idea.
16. What song will always remind you of 2006?
"One," by Johnny Cash, even though it came out a few years ago. Bjork's Vespertine album, ditto. Pretty much anything by Imogen Heap. I know "Crazy" was played all over the place all the time, but I don't really tie it to this year - it seems like something that has always been and always shall be. And of course, Thom Yorke's The Eraser.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you happier or sadder?
Much more cynical, and yet incredibly optimistic.
ii. thinner or fatter?
The same. Maybe a little thinner? My weight is pretty consistent. I'm wearing a bra that fits, which is exciting.
iii. richer or poorer?
Oh so poor. All assets I had are gone.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Creative projects. As usual, I lament the fact that I do not have a band.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Doubting.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Hung out with the family.
21. Did you fall in love in 2006?
I was already very much in love, but was finally able to put it into practice.
22. How many one night stands?
None.
23. What was your favorite TV program?
You think I'm going to say Battlestar Galactica (yay!), but the answer must be The Colbert Report. Much love also for Rome and Project Runway. And the UK-only, but available in bits on YouTube, That Mitchell and Webb Look. That's numberwang!
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Oh absolutely. And my hatred burns bright and fierce. I'm looking at you, various perpetrators of injustice, especially when you are petty also and bad liars.
25. What was the best book you read?
I didn't do much book reading; this was a big magazine and online year for me. I thoroughly enjoyed Nicholson Baker's The Fermata.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I finally scored a copy of The Gray Album. So incredibly good.
27. What did you want and get?
Ciro.
28. What did you want and not get?
Ciro in England. A truly excellent film that I had no reservations about showing to people.
29. What was your favorite film this year?
Brick.
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I held a tea party, and then some of us went out to dinner at The Blue Goose. I was 26.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Ciro. England. (Sorry to belabor the point.) Also, it would have been nice if "Embers" had been really good. And, Jesus, I need to edit that music video - it'd be cool if I'd done that and it had become popular.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
Eclectic, as usual, based around skirts, layering, and interesting juxtapositions - although while I was in England, mainly jeans, sweaters, scarves, pirate jackets, and a tweed newsboy cap. (It was cold, and I have no winter coat. Also, limited suitcase space.) I'm digging the longer hair so far.
33. What kept you sane?
I can't say that it did. I'm glad I have a notebook, though.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
My heart will always belong to Henry Jenkins, director of media studies at MIT.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
I'm up in arms about pretty much everything all the time, but most of all about the free exercise of civil liberties (which I feel encompasses both gay marriage and digital music rights). I'm also strongly in support of more open borders. I'm annoyed by the corn ethanol thing. (Corn: not a very efficient energy source, and using it as such is mainly a subsidy to companies like Monsanto. Plus, it is already starting to drive up food prices here and in Mexico.) I hate the consistent attacks on science, and I hate that the government keeps ignoring really clever recommendations by their study groups because they care more about political pork.
36. Who did you miss?
So many people at so many times.
37. Who was the best new person you met?
I met so many cool people! I couldn't even say who is the most cool. The most influential so far have been Steve, Jon, and Alan; the ones I feel happiest around are Julia, Emma, Sarah, Dror, Yiwon, and Annelies. And I have high hopes for friendships with Dan, Edouardo, Giacomo, and Howard.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006.
It's okay to make mistakes, and people forgive you for them. On this note, don't make choices based on trying to please other people.
39. Quote a song that sums up your year:
You can't await your own arrival.
