Standard Grad School Operating Procedure:

4. Close your main office for a month and send the entire financial aid department on holiday to the Congo until the day after tuition is due.

It might surprise you to know that I'm good at wading through bureaucracy. Yes - I am obstreperous. Yes - I keenly feel the difference between efficiency and inefficiency. Yet I am good at logic puzzles and crosswords; I am stubborn; I am clear in speech, thought, and purpose. Match me against the system, and I win eventually.

"Eventually" being the operative word, and one that often requires both a lateral move and a threat to call my father. No matter how adult and capable I become, it remains true that my dad can take your dad, even if "you" are a powerful world government and have a seat on the U.N. Security Council.

I've spent the better part of this month acceding to paperwork demands from the British government, the US government, Bank of America, and London Film School. Many of these requests could be solved easily without involving me. Most require expensive postage. None allow me to go in, sit down, and talk with a representative to get things squared away without stalemate.

Wish I was king of own micro-nation.

Also, billionaire.

Also, had pet flying horse.

Made of gold.

With hot cocoa spigot.

The thing that irritates me most about this process is my own irritation; I should not particularly care. If I have to defer school for a semester, I have plenty to occupy my time. If am entirely unable to go to school, I will similarly be fine. Great, even. Yet I do care. I care because I do not think I will have to do either of those things; everything will come together at the last minute, and I'll be where I want to be, doing what I want to do. So all this rigamarole is just wasting my time.

Let's face it, London. You know I'm coming. I know you know. Stop acting coy. I'm not a Rules girl.

I know the bureaucracy is arsing you about at the moment, but do you have any rough idea when you might be arriving in town. The offer for a bed still stands, but we'll probably be down in Wiltshire much of the time so we'd have to work something out. Let me know, eh?

I'm not sure whether I get in the evening of the 10th or the morning of the 11th. (10th is a Sunday; 11th a Monday.) And I realize this is an awful time for you - if I need to stay in a hostel or something, just let me know.
