At the end of an era, two things can happen. The first is judgment day - a summing up of all that was good and bad, and an often dramatic revelation of outstanding business. The second is limbo, everything frozen; nobody wants to waste energy on something that's leaving.

I prefer the former; the second is like a death before death.

Unfortunately, not everyone will oblige me in this.

Lately, I've had a compulsive need for fortune telling. It doesn't matter whether I believe in it; I just like to pretend for a while that I can know what's happening and make it turn out right. I think people are unsettled when I ask them to behave as though they can read my palm, as though it's a prank or a sign of greater insanity. Not that it has to be a palm - it can be the stars, or bones, or runes, or cards, or bumps on my head. It just has to be tied to something; you have to point to a tea leaf and say "you see?" You have to work a believable con so that I can imagine, just for a second, I know which way the wind is blowing.
