Malaria is the New Scurvy

rinueMy most notable memory of vomiting occurred during one of the many Thomas-related madnesses and may have been more an excuse to avoid Thomas than a genuine response to drinking too much. Throughout, Valancy bathroom camped with me, assuring me that I looked incredibly elegant. She was impassioned on this point, orating at length on the almost pleasure of watching someone regurgitate so seriously and artistically.
Val, who had also been drinking, has no memory of this.
Oddly enough, this is not the only time that I've been told that I look beautiful and collected when I vomit, as I was similarly assured by a string of awe-struck passerby whilst in Bath. However, it is one of only five times I can think of when I've thrown up.
The US Congress is flipping out about the avian flu again, following an article in National Geographic. (If past US avian flu freakouts have taught us anything, it's that Congress will undo any progress they make when, in about a month, they are up in arms about something else and transfer the funding.) It is also flu shot time, when everyone is exhorted to get vaccinated, and when I never do.
I don't seem to be that succeptible to the flu; I haven't caught it since I was ten, though I've sometimes tended to those whom it laid low. According to my mother, I didn't get it before I was four, and have only had it for a day at a time maybe two or three times in my life. It's like the time I got three chicken pox, none of which itched, or the way I never got poison ivy or lice. I'm somewhat stupefied by the notion that many people get the flu every year, or every other year, and I'm not sure whether to feel proud or left out. I've always had to fake my sick days with stage makeup and fainting.
Perhaps I am some kind of superhero or anti-flu Messiah. Hopefully, the flu will not catch onto this and see me as some kind of challenge, adapting itself into a supervirus that will wipe out the human race so I won't get too cocky.
