It seems to me that the defining physical characteristic of a Frenchman is his neck. Something about the language brooks incredible development of the muscles around the trachea until they're pronounced like marble sculptures. This I think is what makes the guillotine such a brutal work of art; it both seperates the head from the body - reason from heart - and at the same time destroys the neck, thus devastating the marker of a uniquely French physique.
