Val has always referred to herself as a morning person. She likes the cool of the air on her skin and the light of the early sun; she likes to know that by noon she's got things accomplished, bills paid and errands run. Val likes mornings.

Val, however, is not good at waking up. I don't mean this as a moral judgement -- she is stoic and staunch of heart, and she approaches mornings with the fierce determination of the warrior she is. She does not shirk the task of waking, nay -- she is fierce and unrelenting!

The thing is, she kind of has to be because she wakes up very slowly. That is, her body is up and out of bed before her brain begins to fire its frontal neurons. This often involves walking into doors and doorframes and a number of conversations consisting of "bluuuuuuh". Patrick is much the same way, as is his brother, but without pretentions of liking mornings and with a decided preference for remaining in bed.

I am the exact opposite. I wake up all at once, perfectly alert, and often cheerful. I even look good most of the time -- bright-eyed and adorably ruffled. Couple this with my status as a legendarily light sleeper, and you wind up with a lot of "hark! It is three in the morning and I am ready to face the day!"

Ethically, I find this unconcionable, and inconvenient for a night owl. Also, it can get me beat up. Or, well, threatened -- I can dodge those groddy bastards from here 'til next thursday.
