My Reply To A Friend Who Asked Whether I Had Time To Write A Film Review

I do not have time, sorry.

I'm working approx 50 hrs a week at day job, plus two small kids in house, plus doing a million dishes and a thousand loads of laundry since everybody's home all the time, plus running a magazine, plus have two writing deadlines this month.

I have been awake for 14 hrs at this point and this is the first opportunity I've had to even check my personal email, and that is a normal day. It was actually a slightly lighter than usual workday, but a major storm blew down the fence yesterday and so I rebuilt that section of the fence.

I have no idea when I will have a chance to write any kind of film review, not least because my review of all films right now is "hooray, I am sitting down and have turned this up loud enough I can't hear people asking me for things," which you are welcome to run beneath whatever film is most appropriate, if it doesn't undermine what you're up to.

I am luckily managing to get full nights of sleep, and all my regular meals, and my usual amount of exercise. I am rowing my little boat as hard as I can, but have thus far managed to remember that it won't go very far if I punch holes in it.

Yeah, the shift to working from home has made my days more pleasant, in that I get to avoid people and hang out with my cats all day, but my workday is regularly 10-12 hours now. Interrupted by, like, breadmaking. But still.

And how is there so much laundry and cooking? I am the same amount of people!
