A few days ago, a study published, concerning what children choke on, based on aggregating emergency room data. Top of the list is hard candy, and the rest of the top five is things like vegetables, meat, milk. Food, essentially. The things that one puts in one's mouth all the time, which therefore encounter one's throat regularly.

I appreciate this kind of "water is wet" science, which is less exciting than "eating sufficient bacon might let you breathe in a vacuum!" but is much less likely to be an error in the data.

I will say for myself that I choke on water a lot, probably because I drink a lot of water, and therefore have a lot of opportunities to nearly kill myself by drinking water.

But actually my number one choking hazard is my own spit. That stuff is always in my mouth. And I'll be driving along, breathing like a normal person, and then all of a sudden I am choking and have to pull over and cough a lot.

Note to my enemies: There is probably no point sending assassins after me. I am almost certainly going to take care of my own demise. And it will be stupid.
