She's one of the core characters, although she's missing from a number of episodes in season 2 because I think the actress was sick. But yes, it was very exciting for me when she showed up; I wouldn't say I perfectly identify with her, but I can identify a part of myself with her that I have mostly not seen on screen. Similarly, I can identify a part of Scarlett, although again not the same. Which is part of what I like - she's clearly her own character and not a "type."
I honestly have no idea how much you will or won't like Girls, but I do think it's an excellent series with very good comedy, very good drama, and some of the best acting I've ever seen on television.
