I think you have hit upon the exact reason I always fail to cook with berries. When I buy some, I get so very excited by them . . . ending in the result you have described. (They always seem like a completely frivolous luxury by expense per volume, although they are not actually terribly expensive and pack a rather large amount of nutrients into their small packages. Nevertheless, I always feel like I am buying a carton of precious jewels, and feel somewhat guilty and furtive about it.)
I had the same trouble at Halloween when I tried to make something that involved butterscotch and ended up making it with chocolate instead so I could eat the butterscotch. This is perhaps enhanced by the degree to which I find butterscotch mysterious, as it does not taste like its ingredients.
