rinueIn the true spirit of Easter (which is sugar), Ciro and I kicked things off with Lone Star Donuts -- pink frosted ones. (Lone Star is a 60-year-old donut shop in Oak Cliff that's owned by the girlfriend of my third cousin. And yes; I keep track of girlfriends of third cousins, provided they live in Oak Cliff and make donuts. The third cousin in question is the brother of the third cousin that's married to the direct descendant of Jim Bowie*, which is as good an explanation as any of why I get uppity when people suggest I'm not truly Texan or that the story of the Alamo is insufficiently stirring.)
Following this triumph, we spoke on the telephone with several family members. Mom sent new toothbrushes and novelty socks, as per tradition. I'm not sure how I will cope in the event that I must buy my own toothbrushes and novelty socks, rather than receiving deliveries of such four or more times per year; it doesn't bear thinking about.
Both Ciro's brother and my friend James pulled out of dinner at the last minute, but we and Merlin had a very fine feast of lamb stew, soda bread, and deviled eggs -- a few of them green, as I had the idea of beheading Gentleman Basil for pesto, blended with egg yolk.
We of course watched episodes of The Prisoner to round the evening, since nothing says "Easter" like a chase sequence with a giant white balloon.
