tapped and chapped
May. 19th, 2020 11:34 amMy hands are beat up from gardening of embroidery or some combination of the two. The frequent handwashing will probably help the cuts heal faster, but also makes band-aids impractical. The long slice up the side of my right middle finger is not thrilled to be exposed.
Bought summer pajamas which aren't actually pajamas; loose t-shirts and terrycloth shorts were on sale. I got two improvised sets, same cuts and same fabric in different colorways. In the blue shorts and yellow tee, Ciro thinks I look like I'm about to go boating, presumably on a sloop. But in charcoal shorts and taupe t-shirt, I instead look like I'm about to go canoeing.
Yesterday was supposedly "reopen" day for Massachusetts, but it seems like instead it was "start talking about reopening and making plans to reopen a very little bit on the 25th," which suits me. It seems likely my town will move even slower than that, although we're one of the least-hit spots in the county (combination of luck, wealth, incredibly high average level of education, and geographical isolation).
The big town carnival would have been this past weekend. My mom usually organizes the parade, so she walked the route in her EnKa smock and a mask, tossing wrapped candies to people from a safe distance after asking if they wanted any. (EnKa is the town's main charitable society and is a little hard to define - it's unique to here and has roots about a century back. It's a sorority or benevolent fund in the very old sense.)
I keep seeing social media posts from friends about how they're putting on weight during the lockdown, but I've lost a negligible number of pounds (expected and within my ordinary seasonal fluctuations). Nonetheless, all my clothes feel tight, because I'm washing them every single time I wear them (instead of every few times, my normal "let's conserve some water and not stress the fabric" approach) and am drying them at a higher heat than usual (in abundance of caution stemming from what kills this virus).
A friendly acquaintance of mine who lost his pet corn snake a year ago has recovered his snake because his neighbors found it and a large section of his neighborhood coordinated to gently catch it and return it to him while staying safely well apart from each other. It made the news.
