Where was I at age 16, and where am I now?

(That's exactly half my life ago.)

I don't have any memory of my birthday from that year, but that might be the year I wrote an interactive mystery dinner theater play for my younger sister's birthday, in which our house was an art museum, and cast various friends to play bartenders, heiresses, etc. There weren't any real villains; just people with different goals. I might be wrong - that might have been 15. For my birthday, I would guess that some of us ran around pretending in the woods, then watched Star Wars and fell asleep.

Dating: I didn't really do that. Ever. Not in high school or college or afterward. I'm good at having partners; I'm not very comfortable with maybes. There was some romantic tension with C. Blacker and with my best friend Thomas, but mostly in both cases it made me unhappy, plus C. Blacker had just moved to Venezuela and Thomas was dating somebody else.

Lived: In Dallas (Kessler Park), but Dad had already moved to Boston, so we were back and forth a lot. We'd just rescued a kitten, Pippen, who became my nemesis for many years. That summer, maybe the day after I got out of high school, we moved to Boston, where I mostly kept to myself for three months until I headed back to Dallas alone to start senior year. That was also the summer I pretty much stopped talking to my Aunt Shannon and that wing of the family, and the year I had jaw surgery and shot the short film "Frankenstein: Man or Monster," which may qualify as my first movie. (Previous work was more on the order of recorded stage plays and didn't particularly make use of editing.)

Worked: I didn't have a proper job until maybe three years ago. I sometimes worked as an accompanist, but rarely. I wrote stuff, but to amuse myself. I was a high school student, you know? I've always preferred having free time to having money to spend.

Wanted: People to stop bugging me about college. Nobody seemed to have a clear idea of what I should major in or why, or where I should go. I asked a lot of people. Meanwhile, everyone wanted me to make big decisions and plans when I had no information at all about what was useful or special.

Drove: I didn't get my license until a year later. The family only had one car, and it was usually in use. I didn't see the point particularly until I was living with Uncle Rex and was a helpful second driver rather than an annoying third driver.

Now- 32

Dating: Ciro and I have been married for 3 years and together for I guess 6.5.

Live: 8 miles northwest of Boston in a town called Winchester.

Work: Closed captioner full time, Strange Horizons edtor part time, freelance artist and filmmaker various places for various amounts of time.

Want: To support myself as a film director and SF author, but I see that as unlikely for the near future. To finish paying off my student loans so I can cut back on work and have more freedom to socialize and travel.

Drive: White Honda Accord named Shadowfax that looks like a car somebody in the CIA might drive while going undercover. Real pain to find it in a parking lot; it looks like every other car. This is its power.

Comment and I'll assign you an age.
