My Intentions in 2013
Jan. 12th, 2013 07:58 pmI don't make resolutions so much as campaign plans; this is a simplified what 2013 looks like. (I have a schedule and sub-processes, but let's keep it easy.)
MUSIC:
Record "Dandelion" and "Marathon"
Work up a cover of C.Blacker's "Yours to Bear"
Make copies of the sheet music for "Mary is Tired" (a novelty Xmas carol I wrote this year) for the people who want them
Restring my banjo (nylon strings. I already have the strings.)
FILM:
Clear additional rights for Theater Fire song at start of Hayseeds or write something to replace it
Replace uncleared Hayseeds music
Put Hayseeds online for free streaming and cheap (but well designed) print-on-demand DVD
Shoot and edit "Stanislavskian Clown" short film
Write spacefaring sci-fi feature (working title: Awake)
Start to line up funding to shoot it in 2014 (probably a combination of grants, kickstarter, and private investments)
Do 2 financial workups, one of which assumes we shoot on film. Make that the stretch goal, and really push for it, because we may not get that many more chances and because our comfort this format differentiates us from the wider independent film market.
OTHER WRITING:
Sell at least 3 nonfiction articles
Sell at least 2 speculative poems. Although I am a firm believer that one does not need to be a writer to be a good editor, any more than a gallerist has to paint, my Strange Horizons poetry co-editors AJ Odasso and Sonya Taaffe are extremely prolific, and I think it's a bit awkward for them that I make this such a low priority. So: 2 poems.
Finish time travel story
Get at least 50 pages into Nneka's War (a feminist Starship Troopers, basically)
HOUSEWORK:
Dust office at least every other month (I'll say even-numbered months)
Repaint bedroom
Paint office and put up shelves. (This is a huge undertaking and would take probably a week working full time; it's still plaster and nail holes.)
TRAVEL:
Update passport
I'd like to say this is the summer I make it to Canada, but realistically I give it a 20% chance.
Spend at least 1 weekend in New York
Go see Phineas Gage's skull, which is right nearby
GENERAL:
Switch over my bank account to a better type of bank account
Finish embroidering sweater
Update my photo blog at least 15 times a month
Secure Italian citizenship, which as of 2 weeks from now I'm entitled to
Make a photobook that covers some of the many images I have no prints of, considering I haven't made a print in 5 years
Make at least $3000 from creative work
Pay down $10,000 of student loan debt, not counting interest. (Last year, I only managed about $9000, but paying less interest should allow a certain degree of snowball effect)
Spend at least 15 minutes a week outdoors. (I hope it is clear from this list of things to do, combined with 44+ hours a week captioning, early sunsets, working from home, and very few waking hours in daylight while living in the kind of town where police cars trail you if you are outdoors at night because they have nothing better to do, that this is difficult and takes a concerted effort. I rate my odds of getting this done lower than anything else on the list, including painting the office. Rather than being depressed about it, I try to think of it like being on a space station.)
Go out on at least 6 dates with Ciro, my husband.
Take 5 minutes a day to meditate. It doesn't need to be consecutive or about anything in particular.
It's probably too much to think I'll set up regular office hours on Skype, but I should show up on Skype at least 3 times, because I have a lot of international friends I never talk to.
THE STUFF I ALREADY DO:
Lead workshops, write regularly, post regularly to social networks, submit regularly, edit a magazine, revise stories that have been accepted, keep at least a passing acquaintance with current film releases, remain in reasonably good physical shape
