Owsley died. I don't know why I find that so incredible; I'm not even a part of that culture. But it's Owsley. It's like finding out a fictional character died, or that King Arthur existed and retired to Leeds.

Captioned some English-language Japanese news late last night and was able to do it very accurately because I understand the internal workings of nuclear reactors (various engineering and science courses) and know how to spell the names of most of the towns and prefectures (Val taught in Japan, and I visited and addressed many letters). This is one of the reasons why I enjoy my job and also find it silly when someone suggests they'll "never use" some bit of knowledge as a justification for not learning it. Pretty much if you know something you wind up using it.

Needless to say, it was also an odd emotional experience, because for instance I'd be talking about the radiation levels in Tochigi prefecture and seeing the word Tochigi would make me smile and think of the beautiful mountains and the people I met, but of course I would be typing it in the context of a nuclear crisis. Like running into a friend in prison. (Incidentally, Tochigi radiation levels are elevated from where they usually are, but not at dangerous levels.)

Sunday night, assisted Ciro in making a dish that involved boning two rabbits, on the grounds that I have knife skills and the most thorough anatomy background of the occupants of Uberstott. I made a bit of a mess of the first half of the first one, but then I realized that while it was hard to remove the muscle from the bone, it's very easy to remove the bone from the muscle. Negative space. I also chopped many vegetables. After two or three hours of this cold wet work, my left hand peeled off my left hand. (Just the outermost layer of skin. I'm fine.)
