the sausage making business
Sep. 13th, 2010 11:20 pmSpent most of today and yesterday watching back footage to make notes for the editor, sometimes with James, sometimes with Ciro, sometimes with James and Ciro, and sometimes by myself. Typical note (made up example and not an actual note; also not in the spreadsheet format of the actual note):
Take 54-2. Scene 18. Pages 53-55. Duration 04:22. MCU Ash and Paul on bench. Paul sits into shot. So-so performances at beginning, but stronger as take goes on. Prefer 54-1. Lens flare. Man walking by spikes camera 03:04. Continuity: Ash's snocone. Intermittent camera shake.
I have made well over 200 similar notes so far; I probably have at least that number to go. As well, I'm writing a separate document that says things like "Scene 15: open with 17-3. Cut into 22-1 for Iris's speech. Intercut reaction shots 26-2" running the whole length of the film. It is a good thing I like this film, because I have to watch the same bits of it over and over again a lot. As Yaseen, our sound recordist, observed at 7 one morning, "there's no such thing as movie magic. It's just a lot of hard work."
Otherwise, went to the dentist and was complimented on the hardness of my enamel, and bought macaroni and cheese at the grocery -- macaroni and cheese shaped like the characters from Toy Story. Oh branded macaroni -- how I prefer you to other branded foods, including fruit snacks. Yesterday talked to C. Blacker about music videos, and utterly forgot to return some equipment to someone who is fortunately as busy as me and as prone to forgetting these things.
