Am I the only one who finds receding hairlines incredibly sexy? I'm not saying a hairline alone is going to do it; the guy has to be handsome below the eyebrows, too. But a handsome man who also has a high forehead and that widow's peak above it? Yes. Yes, Jude Law. Yes, Patrick Stewart. Yes, Will Arnett. Yes, Lance Armstrong. Matthew McConaughey and Nic Cage, I still don't like you guys, but I have to admit you've improved. Let's not even talk about the beauty that is Sting, or how much I had a crush on Garibaldi in Babylon 5. Conan O'Brien? Hugo Weaving? Mr. Harrison Ford?
I can't be alone in thinking this. There is something about a receding hairline that suggests emotional maturity, a very large brain full of lofty thoughts, an open face with expressive eyebrows, some degree of social status. (In fact, I am not alone in this; the few scientific studies on this subject suggest that respondents make the same assumptions I just did.) Men with all their hair come off as younger and more aggressive (especially if they have beards, too, when it comes to aggressive). I'm not really attracted to either of those things. There's evidence to suggest that men with no hair loss make slightly more money over their lifetimes, but could this be because people are more afraid of them? Could it be less likely that women will want to have children with them, which frees up their time?
Oh, it makes me sad that beautiful men are going around spending a lot of money and risking impotence to try to keep their hair low on their foreheads. Can't you just let it go? For me? I will buy all your trading cards. I will praise you to the heights. You can stress out about the rest of your appearance - your skin, your weight, your fashion sense. Do what you need to do. But your hairline - your hairline is an asset. From Kevin Spacey to Will Smith to Simon Pegg, you rock my world.
