You know how Hitchock makes cameos in all his films? My trademark is shaping up to be shots in which the audience is convinced I appear, but in which I don't. Meanwhile, I'm coincidentally somewhere else nearby that you don't notice.

Like with the current film: there is a well-lit woman standing at the pharmacy counter, foreground, back to camera. Long blond hair. My green hooded sweater. That's the continuity girl. She's wearing my sweater because it went better with the colors of the room. I'm in the next shot, in brown, in shadow, hair up and reddish, moving across the screen quickly enough you don't really register me.

Or in "Origin of the Milky Way" - in one of the early wide shots, a lot of people are convinced it's me instead of the lead actress. It isn't; she's just moving like me, because she's playing me, and you haven't seen a close up yet, so it hasn't yet occurred to you that it could be someone else. Where I actually appear is as the hands in an early shot of the painting. I lay down the pearls.

It's been unintentional so far, these not-Romie cameos, although as I made the decisions with the continuity girl I was pretty sure what would happen; there is a photo on facebook from another shoot where people keep labelling her as me, when I am in fact the one behind the camera, taking the photo. It's a pattern. I wonder whether it will keep up. There was also a framed drawing on one of the walls that the crew thought was a portrait of me, but which was someone from the 1800s. We picked it up at a car boot sale. I think you see part of it in the wide shot of the TV.

In trendwatch news, I have noticed that it is now very London fashionable to wear mirrored aviator sunglasses. One should insist these are a reference to Cool Hand Luke, even though the particular proportions of the glasses in question, and the fact that the glasses are on young faces, makes them look more Top Gun. Also big: headbands worn across the forehead, Indian princess style, ideally braided elasticated fabric. Are these hitting in America too? I've seen them on everyone here in the past few days, and it seems sudden, but perhaps it has been a more gradual development and I didn't notice because I was sequestered in editing. (I tend to lean toward flashpoint despite this disclaimer.)
