Today is the day before Ciro's birthday, and therefore the first day of his birthday celebration. I can't do much, because I am far away, much like his last birthday. He doesn't plan to do anything either, due to poverty and the far-flung, car-less nature of our similarly poor friends. I am hoping that friends will descend on him anyway, although it is unlikely. I have to learn to stop hoping for things. (Other things I would like: bourbon, an Erlenmeyer flask, the resurection of RES, a print copy of the OED before it goes electronic.)

Without further ado, I present 6 facts about Ciro, to reveal just a few of the reasons he is worth celebrating.

1. He is an indecently good dancer. I didn't find this out until last month, because he has always claimed he is a bad dancer and along these lines will not be incited to dance under ordinary circumstances. He thinks I am biased about this, but he also believes that complete strangers buy him lots of drinks because they feel sorry for him, rather than because they have stopped looking at anyone else on the floor. Ciro does not seem to understand the reasons people buy other people drinks. But that is okay, because he is extremely rhythmic and bendy.

2. His computer is named Falcor.

3. He moves easily from culture to culture. He has partied with Romanian metal fans; he has lived with fundamentalist-leaning Muslims. He's charming in basically any context. He sometimes does editorial work for a cultural sensitivity training firm that also helps teach intergenerational differences.

4. His idea of light commuter reading includes astrophysics texts and pending congressional bills.

5. The artwork he has carted from apartment to apartment is a production still of Humphrey Bogart and an autographed print of the Rolling Stones descending a staircase while crowds of naifs worship them. If you're going to choose some icons to have around, not bad.

6. He and his brother sometimes play a game wherein one verbally mimics an obscure sound effect from a movie, and the other has to identify it. They are scarily good at it, but it is hard to convince them to do it when you're around because they think you will feel left out. I think this is perhaps related to the lack of understanding of the reasons people buy other people drinks.
