Since plain chocolate HobNobs are no longer available, elder statesman the Garibaldi has risen to the top of my biscuit preference list. (Yes, it is named after an Italian general, but not that one. [Why I assume people hear "Garibaldi" and think "Mussolini" is beyond me, but it also bears out more often than it should. Also, too few people immediately jump to Babylon 5.]* This one for instance had redshirts rather than brownshirts to carry out his audacious unifying plans. Abe Lincoln at one point asked him to be a Union general, which is pretty crazy. It didn't work out because Garibaldi started being grandiose.) Nevertheless, I have of late mainly been eating Oreos, as a signal that I am plucky and American.

I read today that H.G. Wells, upon marrying his second wife, Amy Catherine Robbins, decided that it would be more reasonable to call her Jane - at least for day-to-day usage. She could still be Amy Catherine on special occasions. Or Amy Catherine was the part of her that was herself and Jane was the part of her that was his wife? I didn't really understand it and nobody seems to know what was going on, other than that Herbert George cheated on Jane/Amy Catherine frequently, but she stuck by him. I guess she knew going in he was into free love? But where did the Jane stuff come from? Thinking about this has made it impossible for me to get any work done besides requesting an interlibrary loan.

Ugh. I am in a horrible deer-in-headlights headspace these days because I am two weeks away from heading back to the UK and don't really have time to finish anything I was working on here - which means I have stopped working on it - and am also not in a position to do much work on what I will be working on there. I should be better at this by now, but all this stop-and-go doesn't get any easier. Travelling is fine, but I'd like a home, please.

On a side note, is there anything you're really really awesome at but never get to brag about because it doesn't come up very often or is considered indecent for discussion in polite company? I would be delighted to hear you brag about it. I might even make some kind of certificate.

And finally, I would like to plug a British band of which I am somewhat fannish - Chalou St Jude. They have a myspace page. Their myspace quote is "The only solution for me is the Pistols at Dawn." That's the kind of charming guys they are. I like the song "My Personal Favorite." They're just starting out, so I don't know how much of their stuff is available worldwide. Anyway, if you're wanting something earnest boozy garage rock, they are it. I think they google themselves every once in a while, so if you mention them, they may comment and say hello. They are friendly lads.

*Note that I have put a bracket inside a parenthesis, which would seem to fly in the face of standard mathematical notation. It has something to do with information theory, I think - I just know that Ciro showed me some variables and I found them upsetting.
