[This entry is not going to be as literary as usual. I could make it so, but (1) by its nature, it has a limited audience, and (2) after I spent something like an hour critiquing a story by Chad, Yahoo appears to have eaten my message -- thus leaving me with no faith that anything I say will ever post.]

Because I am obsessive (also known as "because I am Romie"), I am not merely content to state that the Richardson Boys are the Round Table. Nay, I must puzzle over which knights they are, specifically.

This is not unusual. One of my favorite pasttimes is to figure out who all of my friends would be in a given story, which is part of why I'm an online personality test addict. I have successfully argued before that this shows my analytical nature. I have also made a case that it allows me to better inhabit and shape myths, true to the age-old oral tradition which allows stories to change to fit their audience. In addition, I have claimed that this system of archetyping has better allowed me to understand and predict others.

Mostly, I think I have too much time on my hands.

In any case, here's what I've come up with:

Patrick -- Arthur, as stated. Boy-king, invested in the idea of Camelot, brings the knights together. Very much a Once and Future King style of Arthur.

Tom -- Merlin, as stated. Well-read, laid back, youthening. Master of computers instead of magic.

John -- Bedivere. Arthur's best friend; a formidable fighter. Considered the third-best looking man in the kingdom, he gets hit on a lot, much to the amusement and chagrin of the other knights. Spear-carrier. In some versions, he's missing a hand or an arm, but can steal best almost anyone in combat. He lives through the last battle, and returns Excalibur to the lady of the lake.

Chris -- Cai. Arthur's brother and valued advisor. Feels desperate need to be taken seriously -- is somewhat pompous as a result.

Will -- much as it would be convenient for me if he were Pelleas, (which would make Ciro Gawain,) both Patrick and Valancy insist that he is Lancelot. Brash, flashy, a true knight and champion.

Ben -- Dinadan. In a sense, Dinadan was the pacifist of the group. He wasn't a coward, but he'd avoid fights if he could. He was generally thought to be pleasant and well-liked, but his pacifism sometimes got on the other knights' nerves. In reality, most of it was common sense: "no, the two of us really shouldn't challenge a band of thirty knights to combat."

Chad -- who claims that he isn't a knight, is Dagonet, King Arthur's fool. Who, incidentally, was a knight. He was no good at combat, but he could generally con his way out, sometimes by disguizing himself as other than he was. He tended to stick close to Camelot, where he acted as something of a support network for the other knights. He's one of the handful who ever achieved the Grail, which he used to cure Lancelot of madness.

Google searches will yield more information. A weirdly good resource is http://www.employees.org/~pcorless/pendragon, which appears to be preliminary reasearch for an rpg.

To close this completely uninteresting entry, I entreat you to take the most important personality test ever. To wit: are you a joker, a smoker, or a midnight toker? I speak of the pompatus of love personality test.

(You have to love a band that can get away with rhyming "Texas," "justice," "taxes," and "facts is.")
