Holiday Pats on Holiday Backs
Dec. 25th, 2007 05:12 pmI've been heavy on the memes lately, and it's getting out of hand. Nevertheless, via Smeg:

Date: 2007-12-28 05:31 pm (UTC)Man, you were blogging back in the day, before there were all these applications - back when you had to knock together your own html, back when we were all po-mo and excited about the untapped possibilities of hypertext. Plus you liked Peter Greenaway and interesting grocers and King Arthur and Machiavelli.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
The collapse of a lung. Talking to you was the first time I imagined that happening. I picture it as though I am very small and standing inside your chest cavity. It's terrifying. When I imagine this, you are always singing something by Alban Berg.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
I love that you have a motorcycle now. I also like how affectionate you are about the people (and animals) you love.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
I remember going to your apartment and falling asleep during Prospero's Books, which I still haven't made it through. I remember getting coffee at XandO, although not what anyone ordered. I remember when you came to visit us in Dallas and we had a talent show.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
I know you sing, and if I recall, you can get by on guitar, but have you played any truly weird instruments?
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
I like "yeah baby yeah" the best. "Harharhar" is highly frightening in the best way.

Date: 2007-12-28 05:40 pm (UTC)XX all the way. So credit goes to Dee, who brought me in to that.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
Twincest, obviously. But also air matresses, light purply-blue-gray, and long blond braids (even though you haven't had one in ages).
3. Tell you something I like about you.
You're forthright. You hold your ground without being confrontational. It's impressive. You figure out what you think, and then you do what you want until you're tired of it, and then you do something else. And you have a bunch of chickens. I liked you before the chickens, of course, but now I like you AND YOU HAVE CHICKENS.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
Sleeping, mainly. And claiming that we were very old, without bothering to mention the ages of maturity for elves.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
I have no idea how you met Ari, or how that relationship came to be.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
Sleepy. You look so happy. But all your pics are confident and enthusiastic.

Date: 2007-12-31 05:11 am (UTC)Babes in Outer Space. It doesn't get better than sexy women in a sci-fi setting, particularly when they're technically-minded graduates of the Arts Magnet.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
Eyeshadow. Which is less a commentary on you than the amount of time we spent in a makeup room pre-show.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
I like that you read a lot and keep on top of current events. I'm also incredibly impressed with your recent financial management.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
Mostly conversations in various booths at the Pocket. Also the time when I was trying to figure out how to get the smoke machine to work but was more interested in talking with you and Marci about Mindscan (the book I was reading).
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
I remember that you were working on a mural, but not whether you finished it or how it worked out.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
Wow, I don't know that I've seen most of these before. (I'm in your "view all userpics," killin' ur d00dz...) I'm partial to "sickly blue fuglyhead," which is nothing of the sort, and I also like "[...] has the most nose". Plus I'm a sucker for "this is just a test."

Date: 2007-12-31 05:35 am (UTC)Although the band split up, I always figured we'd have a 20-year reunion concert. Or at least advertise one with colorful fliers - colorful fliers with carefully obscured date and location.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
High-pitched exclamations in Japanese.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
I've only ever been in it for the hair. And I guess you're extremely sweet to me and you're a member of my family and your birthday is my favorite holiday. I guess. But really, it's the hair.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
I remember in your old house you had lots of glamour shots torn out of magazines and gothed-up with Sharpies. This is by no means the most significant, most vivid, most formative, or most recent memory. I just thought you might not have thought of it in a while.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
Why did you decide you didn't want to do fashion? I liked your stuff, and your ideas for the maternity line. Did something happen, or did you just get tired of it? (I fully support you in your current neurolinguistic studies, because that stuff is fascinating; I'm just curious.)
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
Girl and a bike, hands down. I love that picture. I want a hard copy. The egg roll kimono is very funny, though.

Date: 2007-12-31 03:22 pm (UTC)Well, you wrote about me a lot. And then deleted it, wtf.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
The chops! And dumplings.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
You go slow, but you keep pushing. Like with the writing.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
Playing the "drop this pillow on your face" game. That could kill several hours, easy.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
You can fairly safely assume I go ahead and ask you things as they occur to me. What's occuring to me right now is, (a) what happened with the voice lessons? Did the money go? Have you been spending the money on cigarettes? Are the cigarettes motivated by vocal considerations? (b) Did you get the bookcase, what does it look like, and are the books unpacked? (c) What is the story of how you and Ciro got to be friends - I have forgotten, and (d) would you consider not winning at Scrabble any more?
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
You only have the one. Sure is helmety.

Date: 2008-01-01 03:42 am (UTC)b) My mom had a migraine on saturday so we're going to go get the bookcase next weekend.
c) Ciro and I met in Junior High. I don't remember exactly how he and I became friends, but it was related to sitting at the same table at lunch and both of us being in the roleplaying group. If my notriously horrible memory serves, Ciro and I became the duo we currently are senior year of high school when we were in English together. We also ate lunch together (along with Tom and various others), and I drove him home from school most of the time.
d) You mean ever? Where would the fun be in that? And I'd like to point out that I've won two out of three on Scrabulous so far and we've been alternating, so you're due.
d1) Throw a game of Scrabble? I dunno. There'd have to be something to be gained by throwing the game, obviously, and I can't think of a situation where anyone would care enough about the outcome that I'd feel compelled to throw it.

Date: 2008-01-02 05:11 pm (UTC)2. You're probably one of the only people on-line that knew me in the braid days. I also tend to picture you at the botanical gardens, that day I got kinda sick.
3. Chickens! Just wait till I get my llama!
4. Sleep is a good thing.
5. Ahaha funny story.
Really, it's all Khirsah's fault. She started this HP game and, although I hadn't RPed in years, she managed to get me into it, how I don't quite remember. I was to play Fred (big surprise there), although a very different Fred than I'd played before, he lost George in a rather horrific incident (long story short, he forced to torture and kill him).
Ari came in playing Cedric. (Was a game set in the future, but dead people kept coming back to life). This was right around the time that GoF came out in theaters. Khir made a comment in her journal about how if you watched the twins during the funeral, it was unusual because they had two different reactions, one crying, the other stoic and comforting. She postulated that this was because one of the twins was dating Cedric. And thus a beautiful RP relationship was born.
So that is how we met. Much time passes, and Ari was showing a quilt at a quilt show in Chicago. As I was still doing my Cart Tart job at the time, so I said I'd hop a plane and and we'd make a weekend off it. We connected at an amazing level and I moved out a few months later. Even to this day we're still finding just random ways we match up well. That was an amazing trying period, when I was still working in Atlanta but essentially living in Spokane for the rest of the month.
A year later we are happily planning for a baby (TTC right now), a marriage (as soon as the laws allow), and a farm/B&B (as soon as finances allow, somewhere in the 1-2 year range). I just wish I had known during that stressful time that life would be so good so soon.
6. You know... I am not sure where I got that pic, only that it was on my computer when I first made my LJ six odd years ago. Oh, wait! I do know. It was from my trip after HS graduation to the mountains with my friends. Good times. :)

Date: 2008-01-10 11:18 pm (UTC)1. Tell you why I friended you.
I hadn't been on lj that long, and I was doing a lot of random looking at journals to find people who seemed interesting - I'd search esoteric user interests and then click around until I found people who I enjoyed reading and who posted regularly. That's how I found Johnny M. And then you were on his friends list and I liked your writing (both how you wrote and what you wrote about) and so I friended you.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
Well, I wound up picking this wine red as your user color (I give everybody colors so I can scan really quickly to see who has updated) and so I associate that color with you, although it is one I probably imposed on you. (I'm not sure, as I normally take a certain number of cues from the user's color choice on their main page, so maybe it did originate with you. It works well as a background for most of your user icons, especially the one you used on this comment.) Otherwise, I closely associate you with snug knitted caps, trigger gloves, tea, hanging laundry, spinning yarn, bicycles, layered clothing in the cold, nice warm indoor burrows when it is late and the weather is awful, and being careful with crumbs. Lots of comforting things.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
As I've mentioned, I find you comforting. I guess that could sound like small praise - it's always a risk to call someone "safe" - but, well, you are tender and thoughtful and frightened and brave.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
Although I have never seen a photo, I have a (likely innacurate) internal picture of you and of the place where you live (you have a low ceiling and lots of places to sit and the walls are coated in Tuscan yellow resin), and I visualize almost all of your entries. This is not something I do with anybody else; with other people, I stop with the words. But I have various memories of you in cafes and on sidewalks in late autumn and in a class sitting at your desk (in a circle with other desks) and cleaning the stove and holding a large black telephone reciever, and they are perfectly clear, and there is a particular way you move, although you may not move that way at all.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
I have no idea why you are where you are, or what you intend to do next. Not in any critical "what are you thinking?" sense, but simply by virtue of having no information. It's not terribly important, and I'm happy not knowing. I just like to imagine that at some point I'll run in to you someplace, although I also like to imagine that we correspond for 70 years and never meet and writers and historians talk about it.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
I am excited when "bliss" comes up, because I enjoyed that film and enjoy remembering it. But my favorite user pic is "chorus," which perfectly captures what it tries to capture. (It also tends to be on entries that are happy or mischievous.)

Date: 2008-01-10 11:48 pm (UTC)1. Tell you why I friended you.
I think perhaps you friended me, and then I looked at your journal and liked it. Either that or you were showing up on the friends lists of a lot of my friends. Mostly, I was lucky enough to see your journal, and it was insantly obvious you were the sort of person it was nice to have around.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
I'm just going to free associate... Gin, impractical shoes, fetching short hair that reminds me of the 30s, Carl, excited small mammals, "right," accurate navigation, and the mad desire to be disreputable even though one knows one is too responsible to manage it.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
I have trouble thinking of anything I don't like. I love your periodic determination to be homey and settle down in the country and make pies and keep a neat house and have a yard full of dogs, and the way you quickly abandon this plan in favor of either drinking and watching shows you've downloaded or invading the nearest mosh pit.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
I remember the first time I met you, in Bath, I was so excited I could not stop banging my fork on the table. I also remember a time I met you on the steps of the British museum and you were wearing a black coat and blue shoes and you looked very chic and I wanted to film it with this nice move in, but did not have a camera, a dolly, or a context for the shot.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
I think I mostly just ask. The stuff I don't know is the stuff that you don't know, mostly - long-term plan kind of stuff that changes all the time. Hmmm. Okay. What's your favorite biscuit, and do you have an opinion on the pink wafer?
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
You have great icons generally, but I am especially partial to "drink and be merry." I do love all of them, though, and think you use them well.
