Surely you will not mind if I mark up this valuable fourteenth-century text with my pink highlighter pen - it's so hard to keep all the names straight. I must say, I don't like the way they used to put spines together; I had a devil of a time folding the book back, newspaper style, so as to keep the other hand free for the highlighter. There were several times when I got so tired of fighting to keep the front parts curled, I had to fold a corner down to mark my place while I had a break.
Also, I've already spilled water on some of the pages, but I'm sure it'll be just fine when it dries; I mean, it's just water.
Or you could try my patented librarian technique: drop the eighteenth century book from the safe so the cover falls off, tie it back on with archival tape, replace on shelf and hope that everyone thinks it came like that. What?
We should make a slasher film for bibliophiles - books dismembered left and right, characters screaming things like "no! Not the Dickens!" We could make book destruction the new cannibalism.
