Humans

This is the best thing my friend Jamie ever said:

"I finally figured out the difference between me and my sister. She wants to save the world – the plants and the animals – and I want to save the people who live there."

I really like people. I often forget this, because in a purely theoretical sense, they frustrate me. Let's face it: people are cruel, selfish, short-sighted bigots who resist change and award Oscars to Titanic while trading our rainforests for more cows. This, and more, tends to make me lock myself in a tall tower and rain scathing diatribes upon the masses, who I despise beyond all reason.

Of course, once I actually spend time with them, I recall that I enjoy their company. I love that I can pull into a muffler shop, concerned about a low tire, and pull out again five minutes later with no fee charged and a free lollipop. I love that when I slip on the ice, there are four strangers to catch me before I hit the ground. I love that I can strike up a conversation with an old man in the airport and talk about the economic future of the oil industry, and its impact on cyberpunk. I love the guy in the straw hat and the army dress uniform who smiles whenever I look at him.

Huzzah for individuals.
