Public Service Announcements

Announcement One:
If you are using an lj "Plus" account (the kind that lets you upload extra user pictures if you let lj put ads on your journal), this now includes interrupt ads. When I go to comment in your journal, lj tries to make me wait 30 seconds and watch a stupid ad. I get around this by reloading the page, and it's not all the time, but I think you should know it's started happening.

Announcement Two:
You may have noticed I am currently footnoting with a vengeance. This is because in an interview I saw with retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, he mentioned that he footnotes his opinions so as to give extra information for people who want it while keeping the main text focused and non-digressive -- the quintessential role of footnotes, basically, the idea that they provide information which is not essential but which may be helpful or interesting to some. Stevens mentioned that the use of footnotes had fallen out of favor, with the younger justices in particular suggesting that if the information is important enough to include it should be integrated with the text, and if unimportant should be omitted. I have noticed this trend myself, and I am against it! I think a footnote is a nuanced and beautiful thing, a personable aside, an extra gift.*

*I hate end notes, though.
