Onward to October
Getting cold enough these days that the trees are beginning to think maybe autumn, maybe, although it is still in the 70s during the day and not much below that at night. Have had entertaining conversations with Massachusetts natives exclaiming about how hot it is and how they make their kids pause to eat ice every few moments so that they don't get heatstroke. And, you know, Texas. So I mostly smile and say noncommittal things like "oh my!" I like being outdoors at the moment, but am also looking forward to when it's cold enough that the maple I can see from my office window goes bright red. (That said, it's been a historically wet summer, so the leaves may be less spectacular this year. We shall see.)
Had dinner at Scarlett's on Wednesday; among other things she made a kale and avocado salad with a Caesar-inspired dressing that was intensely lemony and fishy and salty. I ate, I would conservatively estimate, five normal people servings and mainly stopped at that point because there was none left. If there is a better flavor combination than salt, fish, and lemon, I don't know what. I would eat balsa wood dipped in that if need be. Scarlett's friend Brian was there, and he is an astronomer who regularly travels to places like Chile and Antarctica to do experiments and check telescopes. Plus we watched Big Top Peewee. Not too shabby an evening.
Beginning to get excited about my short film to illustrate "The Eggshell Curtain." I can tell I'm getting excited about it and have chosen the right approach, because I am making highbrow comparisons to obscure and critically revered pieces of video art (in this case by Northern Irish artist Willie Doherty), and this suggests a certain egotism. It also doesn't escape me that I will yet again be making a short film in which a redheaded woman in her late 20s/early 30s confronts existential problems in a banal setting while science fiction goes on. I certainly do have an oeuvre.
Anyway, I need to hurry up and shoot it. Even though I know from experience that I should be able to accomplish this shoot in a day (it's a 4 minute film), I can't imagine I won't be forced by circumstance to do it piecemeal. So tomorrow is recording the voiceover (which for once comes first, given that the text is locked) and maybe calling the Nikon store to find out whether a lens mount I want exists or has ever existed anywhere but in my desiring (signs point to no, but it would be awfully nice to use these Ricoh lenses on my Nikon body. Just saying. I really don't want to have to hack this myself, any more than I want to make my own pencils.)
