Honor Among Thieves
1.
Despite being an introvert, Patrick has a much wider circle of acquaintances than I do, which has given him the opportunity to experiment with the best way of saying "I am going through a divorce." He's gone through several drafts at this point, and has found that the best way to get the situation across is:
"My wife ran off with an Italian filmmaker."
He says that, and people instantly understand that the divorce could in no way have been averted - an Italian filmmaker! He is sure to be handsome, and perhaps he cooks, and sings, and writes poetry! They understand that Patrick is capable attracting the kind of woman who runs off with an Italian filmmaker; the kind of woman who would be appealing to an Italian filmmaker; the kind of woman who perhaps makes Italian films. There is an immediate reverence, an esteem and an understanding that this is not the kind of divorce that would occur in their own lives. Never mind that it is not a wholly honest appraisal of the reason for the split; it is also not wholly dishonest in its representation of the present.

I have in fact run off with an Italian filmmaker, and he is handsome, and he does cook, and sing, and write poetry, and I am very deeply in love with him. I don't usually go in for love songs, or soul mates, or one trues, but I might have to consider changing my position on the subject. He is perfectly my equal, and that's something I never expected to find. I have finally met my match.

On the subject of filmmakers, it's worth watching Wes Anderson's commercial for American Express. (Click the picture of the guy in the baseball cap.)
